a champion with one less tooth

Big news about Lucia.

#1 Last Sunday, she took part in her first ever hip-hop competition with her dance team, the Talent Allstars. It was in Sacramento (almost 2 hours away), and the event was predominantly a cheer competition, but it did have a funk/hip-hop division, too, with levels divided by age. HUNDREDS of cheerleaders (and dancers) competed, if not thousands - it felt like thousands - plus the thousands of proud parents. This was a big and LOUD venue for their competitive debut. The stage was about four times the size of the area they're used to practicing on, which caused a little bit of a challenge as they took the stage.

Heeheehee. That cracks me up every time.

I think their entrance got the audience excited about their performance and I'm not exaggerating when I say that they got the biggest and loudest applause of any team. The roar was deafening.

So deafening, in fact, that they missed their cue for the second part of the routine! They stood like that while their music ran on, started back up from the beginning and ran through to the second part again. Lucia is on the far right. It was an endless moment, let me tell you. Here's the rest of the routine:

(Sorry about whooping and the shakiness. You can watch another video of their routine here. The only thing about this version is that Lucia is out of the frame for a bit of it because she was "out of formation" aka too far over to the right :)

Hers was the third to last team to compete, and then there was a crazy 20 or 30 minutes, while the judges were judging, that they played more crazy-loud music and threw beads and got the kids so jacked up that it was practically a mosh-pit down there. Crazy. Finally, the never-ending awards ceremony where it seemed that every team that competed got a trophy. There were so many divisions and categories and age-groups and on and on, some with first, second and third places awarded. We had no idea what was happening. By then it was past 8pm of the first night of daylight-savings, so really 9. Poor Weewee! She was SO tired.

But anyway, they won! They got first place! Okay, so they were the only team in their age division, Minis. :) (They were by far the youngest competitors; Little Bianca is the youngest at 3 and Andrew is the oldest at 7.) But regardless, they scored well enough to qualify for nationals in Vegas, baby! What an experience, for all of us! For being a Waldorfy, peace-loving, somewhat crunchy family, I'm not sure exactly how we got involved in the world of competitive dance teams, but here we are. We were so very proud of Lucia. She was awesome, all the kids were! And really, could she be any cuter? I love how she gives her all to everything she does. She tries so hard and takes it seriously. As we all know, booty-shaking is an important skill to have and here, we're giving her a head start in life. Do you love those MC Hammer pants, or what?! I used to have a pair in black about, ummm, twenty-some years ago. They were cool.

Lucia was excited by the whole experience and she didn't even realize that they'd "won" until several days later when she got her blue ribbon from Nitty, her teacher.

#2 The other exciting news, is that Luci lost her first tooth on Tuesday. It had been loose for almost a month. We were at the playground when Lucia bit into a hard cracker and her tooth bent way back. Eek. Then we couldn't get it back in place, so I just pulled it out. Double eek!

Awww, my baby girl. She is such a miracle.
